The Meatrix - Do You Know Where Your Food Comes From?

You can thank Crystal Davis for passing this link along to me. The videos are very funny, but at the same time touch upon a topic about which I am becoming more and more passionate--factory farming and its negative impact on health and our country's general social and economic security. Definitely check out the videos but then be sure to explore the rest of the website, especially the "Meatrix Interactive 360"

The Meatrix

Some discussion points to consider: Do YOU know where your food is coming from? Are the conditions in which the animals you eat of importance to you? Do you worry about whether or not your food is (1) safe, or (2) healthy. Do you think the issues surrounding "factory farming" are legitimate or exaggerated?

  3. I think the Meatrix was really eye-opening in the sense that it put into perspective the inhumane conditions animals are put through in these corporate farms. The issues surrounding "factory farming" are not exaggerated at all, and in fact, are completely legitimate. What many people fail to realize is that the animals living under these horrid conditions are very unhealthy and stressed, and consequently, the quality of their meat is very low. Low quality meat directly affects our health, and therefore, I hope the Meatrix, among many other informative videos, help people to understand the urgency of this issue.

The Meatrix was a very compelling video that put me in a point of view I have never experience previously (that of an animal's). From this perspective the facts the video displayed were much more tangable and truly allowed me to broaden my understanding of factory farming. Great video!

  5. The meatrix showed me what animals are out through behind the curtin. I was not familiar with how these animals were kept in such inhumane conditions. I believe that more people shoukd be aware of how these animals are treated beacuse those conditions that the animals live in can cause disease and cause a threat to our health as well.

  6. I think this video on the meatrix is a very good thing to show people to open their eyes on where their food comes from. Not only does it show where we think it comes from and where it actually does, but they list the things that the factories do to the animals, such as give them antiboidtics. Also, I think this would be a good video to show a lot of people from children to adults. It's very informative so the adults stay interested. Also, since it is animated I think kids would be more interested rather than an adult talking to the screen.

  7. I think that unless people are dedicated to knowing where their food comes from and in what conditions the animals are, they aren't necessarily going to see videos such as the Meatrix. This is why i think that there should be a way to put something like this in a place where people would see it without having to search for the exact article. I know TV doesn't usually have this sort of material, but something of that sort, where people would view it anyway.

  8. I think this video is trying to open up our minds and make us aware of the food that we are eating and how that certain food is produced. I feel like we are don't know entirely what goes on behind the scenes of our foods. I myself was not aware of the over dose on antibiotics that are given to the animals nor the torturing that is done towards the animals. This video sort of tries to lean people towards the vegetarian side. The meat we are eating isn't as pure as we think it is. This video informed us more on factory farming and the way things actually work behind the scenes. It really was a compelling video!

In resopnse to: learn about the issue

As a consumer of meat products I feel the packaging of the product or the producer should include the information about the rearing of the creature and how it is treated/fed/cared for before slaughter. Before consumption of meat products I will think twice about the past of the animal it came from, what was
put inside the meat, and the negative affects it may or may not have on my health.

  10. Before watching this I honestly thought that the animals we eat came from a clean little farm out in the country somewhere. I would have never thought that the animals would be jammed packed in a factory farm. This video was defiantly an eye opener for me. Not only was I shocked at the brutal treatments in which the animals have to endure, the Meatrix made me question what I have been eating. After all if the animals are being feed over doses of antibiotics and are receiving diseases, then i too am eating antibiotics and diseased food! I am glad I saw this, it makes me want to do more research on what I put into my mouth. There should be more videos like this to make people more aware of where their food is coming from.

  11. I was raised in a family with a boundless love for animals and all living creatures. I am going on my fifth year of being a vegetarian because of my opposition to animal cruelty as explained in the Meatrix. Also, though my parents aren't vegetarians, they do believe in buying their greens at local farms such as the one at my horse barn in Ipswich. Because of my emotional connection to animals and for the sake of being a healthy eater, this video meant a lot to me. I hope that others watch the Meatrix and start or continue to care about the environmental concerns my parents taught me to care for.

  12. Although I've been aware of some of the harsh conditions that animals go through in these factory farms I've never paid much attention to the harm it can cause us, humans. Not only do the disease and poor health of the animals hurt our community's health but they also pollute things we need like ground water and the air. The video is right, these things happen because we let them. Buying more organic is good for the planet and your family. It's a shame that packaging companies hide the truth to get money.

  13. I think the Meatrix is a really great first step in getting people to be more aware of where their food comes from. It's a quick way to explain the reality of factory farming. Surprisingly, there are plenty of people completely oblivious to where their meat comes from, so this is a great eye-opener for anyone unaware. My mom has always been careful to purchase meat from humanely raised animals, and I'm really thankful for that, especially after seeing this.

  14. I found it interesting that more people don't really know where their food is probably coming from. I have heard of stories of how animals are kept and how they are treated in places like these before. I'm just surprised that people choose to ignore it.

  15. After watching the Meatrix video I feel compelled to help. This video isn't too serious yet covers a lot of important topics about the Meatrix. It made me sad even to see cartoon pigs and chickens treated the way they were. People these days are too worried about money rather than health. They treat their animals like dirt so they can live the high life. In the video the bull talks about how they feed the animals antibiotics just to keep them alive, but in the end it is going to end up hurting other people. There is a saying "You are what you eat," so if someone ate a bad pig then then they would become sick as well and it eventually becomes a cycle of illness. This video was an eye opener for me and I feel that we are in need of a change so lets make one.

  16. The Meatrix was a really effective and creative way to show the public where the majority of their meat and dairy really comes from. The awful conditions the animals suffer in are wrong, and I hope more people see these videos so that they can also spread the word and buy more organic products. It changed the way I thought about what I eat and compelled me to try to find out where the meat and dairy my family purchase comes from.

  17. The Meatrix video definitely does a nice job explaining the truth about some of these issues. The video provided an entertaining way to learn about how the animals are forced to live and how that effects the quality of their meat. It was a much better way of explaining this issue than through an article or lecture. It definitely persuaded me to learn about where my meat comes from and look further into this issue...

  18. I thought that it was really interesting how there are a lot of people who don't know where their meat is coming from. The Meatrix was a really helpful and interesting way to inform people about how these animals are being treated and where they really are getting their food from. In order to help these animals, we can all do our part and look more closely at where our food comes from and maybe take steps to reduce the amount of meat that we eat.

  19. A majority of the population never thinks about what they are eating, including myself. The Meatrix video gives me a whole new perspective about the foods I eat on a daily basis. I am going to seriously think twice before deciding what to eat for my next meal.

  20. My older sister is a vegetarian, and she has been telling us for years "Do you know where that meat comes from?" We usually just ignore her when she gives us random (and gross) facts about these farms, like one hamburger can contain up to 100 cow's meat. Recently though my family has been buying meats like free-range chicken as an attempt to rebel against factory farming. This simple video was a very compelling argument with just simple details, like that the pigs were discolored and malnourished. This entertaining video is a great way to "spread the word."

  21. The videos of "The Meatrix" really opened my eyes about factory farming. I thought things like that only happened in movies and online games. I find it rather disgusting that animals could be treated that way (even if they are going to be killed) & were put in conditions that were not only harmful to them, but to us too. It really makes me think twice about buying certain items at the grocery store.

  22. After watching the meatrix my eyes were opened to something i never really thought about, where is the food i am eating coming from? Are the animals treated well? Now i know and i think others should too.

  23. Before watching this video I did realize that animals had been treated cruelly when in slaughter houses etc. But I wasn't aware that communities had been destroyed and the workers had also been treated poorly. The animals that are being slaughtered are obviously not in good condition and to think that not only is it abuse to the animals but also that we are putting those sad creatures into our bodies is horrifying. The animals are diseased and, as this video stated, are being given pills just to keep them alive. This movie may have exaggerated the "evilness" of the factories but I do believe that meat factories do not treat the animals in humane ways and something needs to be done about it.
