The Black Hole

At Green Fest, there was a simulation set up called the black hole. As you walked through the "tunnel" it got narrower and narrower. There were bottles, wires, batteries, and paper getting in your way and retorical questions causing you to think.

After you went through the "black hole," there was an open tent with pictures of nature and recycling and signs inspiring you to make a change while there is still time.

I think this would be a neat visual to constuct at Pingree one day where everyone will have to walk through it. Just one more way to get across to people that we need to make changes...and soon.

  1. Could we work with the art department to construct a similar exhibit for Earth Day 2010?

  3. I think this is very creative. As you walk through you get to see everything that is polluting our earth and as the hallway gets narrower everything gets in your way kinda like how its getting in the way of a Green world. Then, once you get in the tent with all pictures you realize what could happen if we all recycled.

  4. I think that this would be a great idea for Pingree to have based on the fact that I'm always told that the environment is changing for the worse, but I never actually get to see the damage. This will be an eye-opener for everyone and also show that if everybody does their part to recycle, we can save the Earth.

  5. I think this is an excellent idea. People always tell me to recycle everything I can and to reduce waste, and I do, but a visual representation like this would be much more effective on me. Numbers and charts work to prove points, but I'm more of a visual person, as many people are, and if Pingree were to make one of these not only would we be getting a good point across, we could also use recycled materials to make an exhibit that could be considered eco-friendly as well.

  6. I think this is a great idea. It makes a larger impact on me to witness ideas rather then hear about them. Being exposed to the new ideas in the tent would allow me to see new approaches to things that i would never really think of doing. The black hole is a cool way of getting the point of change across.

  7. This is a really good way of getting the point across. It makes it obvious that we are distroying the world and that it is up to us to save it. Lecturing people is an ok technique but that will usually just bore people this way people would actually listen to what is being said to them.

  8. I agree, this is a fabulous idea. I know it's hard sometimes to get people to understand why we need to be economically friendly, and it's things like this that actually get through to people. I know this would work on my Dad, who completely denies global warming and think that using up energy is what we were put on this earth do to.
This project reminds me of something I did in July for an Ipswich sustainability fair. A group of people designed mini golf holes with different themes. Mine was blue, and I glued heaps of recycling onto it as obstacles. I told people their golf ball was the fish and they had to swim through the mass of garbage in the Pacific Ocean to get to their destination.
