MassBike

MassBike is a group that, you guessed it, works for the bikers of Massachusetts! They have 5 goals: "working for better laws; improving access and safety for bikers; educating bicyclists and those around them; encouraging commuting by bike; and getting people riding." In the interest of more Pingree bike-to-school days, I was thinking it would be cool to get a representative to come talk about some of these things- at GreenFest they said that they do stuff like find safe routes to school, which is important for some of our farther-traveling classmates. I know Mr. Furnari is talking with Colin Davis about doing an assembly for our first bike-to-school day of the new year, and it would be sweet to get MassBike involved too! Check out their website, and if anyone's interested in joining MassBike they have a student rate of just $15!

  2. Biking to school (or anywhere!) is a great, fun way to get fresh air, exercise, and save our planet! I have biked from my home in Rowley to Pingree a couple times, and it is not too hard (only about a 25 mile round trip!) or dangerous (there are many back roads, and you can ride through Bradley Palmer). However, I have been to some towns where they have bike routes or sidewalks on almost every street, which makes it much more safe and accessible for bikers of every level to bike through busier areas. I think it would be great if we could talk to MassBike about adding more bike lanes.

  3. Biking is a great, fun hobbie, that is extremely productive. Geting people into it could change peoples eating habits, slim down our country, and inspire others. Its also great that it will also raise awareness about the stare of our environment

  5. Biking is awesome because it benefits both you and the planet. Here is why:
    1. Reduces pollution
    2. Great exercise
    3. No car sickness
    4. Fresh air
    5. Beautiful scenery
    6. Inspires others to do the same

  6. Getting more organizations to promote biking to school for Pingree students is a great idea! If the Pingree students that live close to school could bike at the appropriate time of year, then our school alone could help to decrease CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. I also think that it would be very helpful if we could find safe bike routes to school for students who live further away, so that they could contribute too!

  7. Last years bike to school day was very successful and having them more often is important. A lot of people participated and I think it would be the same for this year too. Having someone come to school and talk about safety would be useful. Hopefully we can set a trend for schools in the towns that us students live in when they see us biking.

  8. I think this is a great idea. It's very European to bike to the places you need to go rather than drive everywhere. I bike into downtown Hamilton all the time (like today) and I always feel better afterwards knowing that I saved our planet from that much more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Unfortunately, it can be hard to come by bike lanes around here, which makes it a little more dangerous, but hopefully things like the Mass Bike program and Bike to School day will encourage our society to make a little more room in the roads for bikers!

  9. The more people bike and the less time drivers are behind the wheel the better. we can cut down on CO2 emissions. last year the turnout for bike day was great and it was nice to see so many people making a good effort. everyone was safe too!
